Thanks to a great number of requests I have added my first take on enhancing the twitter sharing.  There is still more to come when I work it out, but for now this is where it will be till I do.

To use the features it’s pretty simple. Here is the priority order by which the system will work

1. “twitter_text” custom field setting inside a page or post
2. Default URL prefix
3. Title + URL or Clean URL

Twitter text inside a page or post takes priority, then the global default URL prefix, then finally the Title + URL or Clean URL.

Also there may be on some systems a problem with the Page Exclusion where it has lost some settings, if your having problems, just re-do your settings and all will be fine.

somehow I missed a small change I made to enhance one thing, screwed up another. All fixed now.

This release has seen the addition of Soundcloud, Vimeo and Dailymotion to the icon set. These are only available in the follow widget and follow tab. They are configured just as with all the other follow icons, it needs to be setup in the admin screen before it will work on the widget page.

We seem to have met a new and enjoyable stage of stability which promises to be just right for me to get us to version2. I just need to make sure that there are no more function I need to create and test with the old datasets before moving forward to what is next generation for this plugin.

1.18.10 is now out in the wild and has no reports of problems. A completely stable release.

In this release I have changed the way the Follow links are built, going for a more modular style. Works well indeed and saves code and will make it much easier in future to transition to version 2.

On top of this transference to a new style I’ve also added the FourSquare to the follow tab, but forgotten it from the follow widget. So before I transfer the version from 1.18.5 to 1.18.6 I’m gonna make 1.18.7 and let you guys miss out on it unless you want to beta test the new Share Image URL support.

The new share URL support allows for you as the creator of a post or page to choose a specific file that will be the share image URL. The share image URL tells people like facebook what to show, and now you can tell facebook by setting that option.

To make the system show the image of your choice into the system all you need to do is add a custom field called “image_src”.

Once you click the button to add the new custom field it moves up into the area above.

And now if you have set this and also chosen show image from post or page then this will over-ride that setting making the URL you put into the image_src the one that will show instead.

this will only be a beta release as there’s still stuff to do to add the follow widget.

I’ve added new theme support in to the plugin for the theme MyMag. It’s a very simple to use theme, but has some bits where it did not interact so well with share and follow as the follow tab would be overwritten with other images that are part of the menu system.

It’s all because there is an image item that has a z-index set in the css properties, which opposes the plugins nertral css stance.

Here is the automatically added CSS code that is inserted when you have chosen the MyMag theme support option from the drop down list in the admin page.

#follow {z-index:1000;}
#subpage .content ul.socialwrap li {background-image:none;padding:0 !important}


Do let me know if there is other CSS that you have added on top of this that you have found to be successful in making the share and follow plugin look best.

After the recent problems I have spent a bunch of time focused on the code, refining it and then testing it all over the place.

It has now been tested on various revision of PHP 5 and also numerous LAMP and WAMP systems. I believe that we are now in the position of having a 100% stable release that works as described. You need WordPress version 2.9.0 or above.

Despite all this positive nature I still have to ask you to tell me of any bugs or issues with this build.

Ok I’ve had to change the release to go back to version 1.17.3 while I look into a problem. It’s a very weird problem where I have been unable to replicate it myself but the people out there in the field have been having problems.

The symptoms are that when you make a post or update it gives a blank page and stops working, and often gives a 500 server error. None of this is good.

Due to the plugin doing this at all I’ve set it back to 1.17.3 as that was good for everyone, BUT if you want the extra features and are willing to take a small risk then download version 1.18.4 as that has all sorts of good stuff in it.

Please do let me know if you get any problems with either release as I want to track them down and find that quite hard when I can’t replicate it.

Sorted out quite a few things, only to find that the email icon was not showing. Did in my tests but I did not clear my cache (shame on me).

This release includes rel=”me nofollow” and also a working email icon.
