Using the Follow Links widget

Using the Follow widget is very simple.  Just drag from the available widgets accross into your sidebar.

When you drag it accross it will suggest some words and terms for you to use, but in all honesty you can put in what you like.   Do change it though and give it your personality.

If you find that only your RSS link shows up, make sure you configure the Follow Tab section of the admin screen, as that is where it gets your details for your follow links.

  • The size corrisponds to the size of the icon.
  • The style is how the link is displayed
  • Direction is the list style, accross the page (left to right) or down the page (top to bottom).
  • Icons to display are the links you want to see in the widget.

    Hi, I love the plugin. I’ve got it working, except I cant’ get the custom text to show. I’ve edited the link text for the follow widget as well as the follow tab, but in the follow widget I see the default text (“become a fan” “tweet with me”). I’ve made sure to hit save and update settings, and I’ve refreshed the page. Any suggestions?

    • Jim, this is a nice easy one to fix. All you need to do is fill in the details for your facebook/twitter accounts into the Follow admin page. Basically I did not want you to have to enter them into many places at once, so you only need to enter it into the admin page, not the widget setup page. If you look a the bottom of the follow widget there is a link that takes you right to the place you need to be at to enter these details.

      for example my link on twitter is http://twitter.com/shareandfollow/

      Once you have entered your links to your facebook/twitter and save them, the item will appear in the tab bar.

      Basically it need to have somewhere to send people before it will show the link.

      All the best
      Andy

      PS. many thanks for your compliments :)

    • actually Jim, I can see the fault you are talking about now, addressing it now.

    • Jim, I have now released 1.11.3 (or in a few moments will have), which fixes the issues with the text in the follow widget. thanks for the head’s up, all fixed now.

      regards
      Andy

      PS : to get rid of the grey that is in your theme on your site, you could add this to the bottom of your Theme CSS.

      #follow ul li a {background-color: transparent;}

    Thanks for the quick fix! Going to donate now.

    Love the widget, it’s just what we were looking for. It’s all working expect the icons don’t display in the widget side bar. The text is there, and clicking it takes us to the correct facebook page, but no icon. Setting it to icon only results in an empty area. Clicking that area does work though. It’s really odd.

    Any ideas what I have configured wrong?

    Thanks

    • Hey Nina,

      It’s a national holiday here in the Netherlands today, I will not be able to help you properly till monday. I hope you have a great weekend. Also could you let me know which theme you use if it is a free one and I will download it to simulate the same conditions.

      Kind regards

  4. Matt says:

    Andy, this plugin looks solid! How do I push this further down on the page of http://www.zeroinspiration.com though? The Follow widget is interfering with the readability of the right menu. Just need to position it further down on the page and have already sifted through the css files (though apparently not well enough!)

    • Hey Matt,

      Give this CSS a try in the “Add your own CSS” section
      #follow {top:160px;}

      At the moment top is equal to 100px, so making top equal to 160px will really clear things. If it is too far just change the px value to a smaller one like 120px

      All the best
      andy

    • Matt,

      Thanks to another Matt I’ve found I sent you some wrong code fixes. To adjust the spacing of the follow tab you need to tell it which side you are working with

      i.e. left side

      #follow.left {top:50px}

      Right side

      #follow.right {top:50px}

      sorry for misleading you before, should be a real treat now.

      All the best
      Andy

  5. Hi Andy,

    I’m trying to do the opposite of the previous poster, I would like to move the Follow links up more into the corner. I tried adding the CSS you posted and changing it to 50px, but nothing happened. I also tried a few other settings (including 150px) but still nothing, the Follow widget stays in the same place.

    Also, I tried setting the Share widget to row but it always stays as a list. Is this a problem with the theme I’m using (fotofolio)?

    Thanks!

    • Hey Matt,

      Give this one a go.

      #follow.right {top:50px;}

      It was my fault, bad documentation, I forgot to tell the other Matt that you needed to say which follow item you are working with. So if you ever move to the left it will be #follow.left

      All the best
      Andy

      PS. I’ll let the other matt know too….

  6. Shahab says:

    I am using this widget but in my theme the icons are not showing .. please help..

    • Hey Shahab

      I am guessing this only applies to the blog section of your website? and that it should show them just like it does the follow ones in the sidebar.

      Anyhow, I can only guess that one of your other plugins or your theme is not playing nicely with the Share Widget… Very strange as it is programmed almost exactly the same as the Follow Widget. I think the best course of action is for me to contact you off list and for you to tell me a) the name of your theme so I can download it. b) the other widgets/plugins you have installed.

      regards
      Andy

  7. SheBear says:

    Just installed/configured the plugin and added the Follow Links widget.

    Minor problem: When I hover my mouse over any of the icons, they disappear. When I move the mouse off an icon, it reappears.

    It’s acting as if a rollover image is missing.

    (But the links are working, though.)

    Help!

  8. Dan N says:

    I am not able to get the row function to work in the follow widget. No matter if I set direction to row and icon only, it still shows a list. I am running WP 3.0 and the now 2010 theme. Thanks.

    • hey Dan,

      Me neither, I’ve spent over 2 hours now doing everything I can think of so far to get the right column to be styled in any other way than the default. I’m gonna keep looking when I have time, but right now I am sadly a bit flummoxed.

      all the best

  9. Greg says:

    Andy – great plugin. I would like to add it to my WordPress blog, but I want to make sure that I know what I’m adding first.

    I would like to add icons at the end of each blog post – not on a sidebar – should I follow the instructions on “Using the shortcode in a page or post”?

    Thanks

    • Greg,

      You just need the automatically added items. You can select also so that it only shows on posts in that section of the admin menu (and lots more).

      You don’t need to download or know any code to make what you want happen, you just need to use the admin page.

      regards
      Andy

      PS. looking at the iconOnly, but I think you will do better with the auto added ones.

  10. Tony says:

    Hi,
    I’m trying to use the 64px icons in a sidebar follow widget. How can I reduce the padding between the icons? If I could drop it to 4 or 5 pixels I could fit 4 icons in a single row and take up half the space.

    Fantastic addon btw! Very clean and pretty.

    • Hey Tony,

      If you let me know your site I can give you perfect CSS but for now I would go for something like this

      #sidebar ul.followwrap li {margin: 0 4px 0 0}

      this will set a right margin of 4px between the list elements of the follow widget in a #sidebar DIV.
      regards
      Andy

  11. LOVE the Widget, and the nice clean design of the icons. My problem is I have the RSS button checked, which is supposedly auto-generated in WordPress. But I’m not getting that button in the Widget box. Can you give me a hint where you think the problem might be? I’m clueless.

  12. Fedil says:

    I have installed your plug-in and thought it was great. I have run into 2 minor issues though. Since I don’t use IE (internet explorer) that often, it took me a bit to see this issue. When I activate your plug-in it for some reason adds space on the left of my post. So it shifts it over and causes some of the text on the right side to be cut off.

    The 2nd issue I had was that the icon row itself is also indented far over to the right. I can shift this by adding negative margins in the admin section. So that one isn’t that big of a deal, but I would like to see if you have encountered my 1st problem and if you know how I can fix it. My website is http://www.ukneeq.com/fedil/blog/ if you need to look at it for any reason.

    Thanks!

  13. Fedil says:

    Ok…I guess I posted my problem too early. It looks like the extra space was created from me trying to shift the icons to the left by using the negative margin. So it looks like really I just have the one problem of the icons being too far to the right. Thanks!

    • Hello Fedil,

      as you have removed the plugin, i cannot help you. I would expect that the answer would be

      #contentwrapper ul.socialwrap {margin:0;padding:0}

      regards
      Andy

  14. Manoj says:

    Hi, Thanks for the wonderful plug-in. I am trying to implement the follow via email. What’s the easiest way to achieve this?

    Do I have to create a form for this or should I be using something like a Google Feedburner? I am new to all this, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

  15. Shawn says:

    Hello, I’ve been loving the share portion of the pluggin, but I cannot get the Follow Widget to work. Nothing will display. I’ve updated the links in the admin section. I’m not using the Follow Tab.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

    • Hey Shawn

      I can’t seem to find any evdience of the widget in your site, and even if things are not saving properly it should still default to RSS for this. But I also could not find any evidence of any widgets on your site. So this leads me to believe that its’ something weird with your theme. I think it’s missing the bits that add the sidebars into your themes.

      regards
      Andy

  16. Michael says:

    Thanks for the great plugin.

    I have set it up and using the row style for the “follow me” widget. Each icon has a carot (less than) sign before them. How can I remove it?

    Thanks

    • Hey Michael,

      Try this on your theme, it should sort you out. Add the code to the “add your own css”

      .SR .widget ul.followwrap li {background-image:none;}

      regards
      andy

  17. Dan says:

    Hi guys
    I’m playing around with this plugin and am very impressed so far. One thing that I’m having trouble with is that, for some reason I can’t understand, the Follow Widget is refusing to let me add lastfm and YouTube to it.

    I’ve added the links correctly in the admin screen (http://www.last.fm/user/dangrosvenor and http://www.youtube.com/user/nogoodreason) yet every time I check the box on the Follow Widget and hit ‘save’, it just un-ticks them. All the other accounts work fine: it’s only these two.

    Any ideas what might be causing this?

  18. Gabriele says:

    hello :)

    there’s something wrong with the follow widget. i set the proper links on admin screen, but every button on follow us widget is stucked on “rss”….i’ve totally no idea of what is happening :(

    • andy killen says:

      Hey Gabriele,

      yeah, I’m sorry I screwed it up. I made a bad code error and did not test enough before release. anyhow, I’ve released a new version now which addreses this.

      And also Share and Follow will soon be FULLY in Italian. One of your fellow country men is helping right now. You can see some of it already.
      Kind regards
      Andy

  19. Ernesto says:

    I added the plug-in on my site and I believe there is formatting problem. In WordPress, if I preview a theme with two columns it displays the applets properly.
    Follow US widget does not appear
    Share Links formatting
    Can you please take a look at it and let me know what you think?
    PS. Plug-in is easy to use and dynamic! Great Work!

    • andy killen says:

      Hey Ernesto,

      When I have a look at your site it seems to be OK. I’m not sure of the issues you are facing?

      As a bit of general info the Share and Follow plugin needs the following to be active to work 100%

      wp_head() in the head section just before the &lt/head> in header.php, loads CSS and and scripts needed
      the_content() in the main section to load the auto shared stuff
      wp_footer() at the end just before </body> usually in footer.php, loads the Follow tab
      Dynamic Widget areas, so that you can use the Share and Follow widgets

      regards
      Andy

  20. So glad I found your plug-in package. It is really fantastic and integrates well with our site.

    One little question, our Follow Widget on the right side has all the icons indented to the right and it just looks a little bit funky when compared to the rest of that sidebar.

    Is there any way to force the icons to be justified to the left so it lines up underneath the heading?

  21. Robin says:

    Hey Andy,

    Great tool! I got it half working, but for some reason the icons are not showing up on the right bar. Could it be my theme? Or am I doing something wrong? I followed the tutorials very closely. But, still no luck.
    Thanks.

    • andy killen says:

      Robin.

      try this css in the “add your own css” section…

      #follow ul li {margin-left:0}

      it’s getting some strange stuff from your theme at present.

  22. Greg says:

    Hello,

    I have been using various elements of the plugin for a while. I have had no problems.

    Now I am redesigning. I took the the Side Tab down…and am now adding a Widget to the Side Bar. All is good, except there is a bright white “underline” or bar under each icon in the row. (See: http://portugalconfidential.com/) How can I remove that bar, or change the color so that it disappears into thebackground?

    Many thanks.
